Honoring Our Heroes

Essay Contest 2018/2019

Forsyth County PTO/A Council

Do you know a real life hero?

Honoring Our Heroes is a writing contest developed in 1995 by the Eastern Cobb County Council of PTAs.  The program was designed to encourage students to discover “real life” heroes who have shown generosity, trust, persistence, dedication, leadership, creativity, caring, bravery, imagination, service, gentleness, courage, or compassion.  The creators of the program wanted students to redefine the heroes they saw portrayed in the media — cartoon characters, professional athletes, rock stars, etc. — and instead recognize the true heroes in their lives.  This year, we’d like our students to choose the hero of their choice - teachers, doctors, policemen, coaches, parents, siblings and anyone else that has made a real and positive impact on a student’s life.

Entries should be typed or handwritten on one single sheet of 8½ x 11 paper — double-sided is acceptable. This entry form must be completed and submitted with each essay along with a picture of the hero, with the student, if possible.  Please label the picture with the student’s name.  Please DO NOT staple, tape or glue the photo to the essay.  Entries will be judged on the student’s ability to articulate the qualities of the hero and to describe the manner in which the hero has impacted the student’s life. Please paper clip the entry form to the essay.

There will be a County Reception on Tuesday, March 13th, 2019 beginning at 6:30-
7:30pm at WEST FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL for the contest winners from each
participating school in the county. This reception is for the essay winners, their family,
and their respective Hero. Heroes will be invited by mail to attend this special night!
Each winner and their Hero will be presented with a book containing all the winning entries.

For any questions please reach out to our Honoring Our Heroes committee chair.

Deadline to submit the Entries: February 1st, 2019
